Church presence at Euro 08

The AGCK was responsible for organizing the church presence at Euro 08. So member churches in Switzerland were involved in the European Football Championship 2008.

The project was not only ecumenical, but also bi-national. The aim was to provide a church presence for both fans and players at Euro 08, and to help ensure that the event was an opportunity for meeting other people.

The projects and events in Switzerland and Austria were held under the motto ‘Church 08. On the ball – for 2008 years’.

In Switzerland the entire project proved a great success ecumenically speaking. The interfaith football match was a particular hit. And for the entire period of the Euro 08, churches and church premises were kept open to the public by some 800 volunteers.

The special church services held in Vienna, Basle and Zurich (national) were very well received. The large number of AGCK delegates at the televised service in Zurich made an impressive statement for Swiss ecumenism.
