Recognition of Baptism
In 1973 the three state-recognized churches of Switzerland, the Federation of Swiss Protestant Churches (which includes the Evangelical Methodist Church of Switzerland), the Roman Catholic Bishops’ Conference, and the Bishop and Synodal Council of the Old Catholic Church of Switzerland agreed the full mutual recognition of baptism.
The Charta Oecumenica and the closing message of the Third European Ecumenical Assembly in Sibiu both prompted further progress in 2008.
All ten member churches have submitted statements on this topic, giving the conditions under which their church can recognize the baptism of others.
The executive committee will then decide whether a document can, or should, be prepared on the mutual recognition of baptism between churches.
